The other key difference is that embroidery thread has a sheen while the sewing thread doesn’t.

Nowadays polyester embroidery thread is commonly used. Embroidery thread has a sheen and it’s a bit reflective and shiny.  While on the other hand, sewing thread has dull color and a rough surface in comparison to embroidery thread. The embroidery thread is also a little stretchy. 

Can Embroidery thread be used as sewing thread?

Now with polyester embroidery thread, you can use it for sewing as well. But there are a few points to be aware of in order to make a choice for your sewing project. 

Embroidery thread is a bit shiny and color fast so it will be clearly visible on the fabric. While sewing thread is designed to disappear into the fabric. Embroidery thread also has a bit of stretch so it can also cause puckering.
